Windy Day Along The Trail in the Ocala National Forest.
A short video on a windy day. I had planned to do some cooking with my East German mess kit gear on a fire but decided it was not safe to have a larger fire with the conditions. We will try again soon.

Although not designed to cook on from what I remember about them, these kits ended up being a favorite to many. I've cooked on mine plenty with good results. These days I try to figure out the most nonstick meals to cook, makes cleaning up go better.

This video is so cool! I literally found a 413D on the side of the road next to an old Little Buddy Heater. I mistook the stove for a 425 and could not find one online that looked like mine until I saw it was a 413D. It is a little beat up but I want to do exactly what you have going on in this video. Do they make high heat green and copper color paint? Think some fine steel wool might polish up the fuel tank instead? Any tips or afterthoughts would be appreciated. Awesome looking restoration and I am sure it will receive complements every time you use it.

@@donjohnson3873 Congrats on your find! I do get comments from time to time on mine at camp since many haven’t seen a stove like it or they have been using propane. I didn’t find green high heat paint in my area or on Amazon. I just used Rust-oleum American Accents semigloss paint in Hunter Green. If I was to do it again, I would primer it too. I didn’t because the can said it was primer and paint combo. It did a good job but it might’ve been better with primer. The fuel tank looks like it’s brass or copper but it actually painted steel. I made the mistake of not using fuel resistant paint. So now I have to be very careful with spills or the paint will melt off. A fuel resistant paint or maybe powder coat might work out good too. Good luck on your restoration. There are many videos on here about it.

Nice restore on that one and great cooking footage. It's completely normal for those valve packings to leak and need adjustment. You shouldn't need to replace them if they seal with a little turn of a wrench, but I don't know how hard it was to turn. Sucks that it ruined the paint job. But packings are made to be tightened as needed. I did notice you had a leak at the gas tip/mixing chamber. There was some yellow flame at 7:53 when you started cutting onions. Again, it's not unusual after are refurb to tune them up after the first burn either. When I was refurbishing a lot of these stoves and lanterns years ago, I ran across Key Graphite Paste. Perfect for sealing stuff that gets really hot like generator tips.

Did the French sell materiel to the IDF? [6:33] Oh hell yeah. They sold Dassault Jet bombers [Ouregons] and Fighters [Mysteres] and a lot of other stuff. I 've seen photos of Isreali soldiers packing the 1-1/2 Qt French canteens too. Deniability could be a reasson not to have French Army markings stamped. There was a riff in Franco/Israeli relations, at which point IAI made bootleg copies of the Mystere fighter. They actually improved it.

Hi John, The cup's measuring line is about 8 oz in US Customary Measures. [6:06]. My theory is that that's the soldier's daily wine ration. French Army is big on having their Wine. I have three of these now. And I bought more Canteen cups sold by Sportsmans Guide as Belgian Army surplus. Which may have been true, but the manufacturer's mark on the bottoms were all PUR-ALU. NORD. Nord was a French aircraft manufacturer, builders of the Nord Noratlas transport. [A French-built Flying Boxcar type transport, used by Armee del Aire, W. German Luftwaffe, Israeli AF , and Greek AF. in its day.] I have three covers, too. One is Olive Green like yours, the other two are later ''Lizard Camo'' -- three toned woodland-like pattern. The olive one, I bought in late '70s or early '80s and it had some Sharpie Pen art on the cover. A phoenix or eagle in black ink was rising out of a Fire in red ink, and the smoke lines made ghostly SS Runes. I snapped it up at the local surplus store. When I got it home, I showed it to my Mom, mentioning that it could have belonged to a French Foreign Legionaire at Dien Bien Phu. The Legion ''sheepdipped''a lot of ex-Nazis and deployed them in Indochina. I left it in the kitchen to soak in some good water. I found the cover, days later, its art work washed out. Fearing disease-ridden South East Asian microbes or German germs -- she had bleached it. A name <<SERGE'>> in India ink did not wash out. Not sure if that was a rank or a guy's name? The covers have a bent wire clip that will attach to the WWII USGI Pistol Belt grommets. Also the wide loop slides on european pistol belts. The bakelite cap is its weak point. I acquired a Chinese copy of the French Bluet [Esbit] hexamine cooker. Very low to the ground. It will fit under the Cup and Canteen in the Lizard covers with double snap sets. Capacity is about 1-1/2 Quart.[US].

Best method for cooking buckwheat I've come up with so far: 1:1.5 grain:water ratio. Fast boil for fiveish minutes lid on. Low enough that it doesn't try to burn to the bottom, hot enough it bubbles of rolls really good. Kill the heat, insulate pot as much as possible (blanket, reflectix bubble wrap, whatever just don't melt your sleeping bag trying this) Let sit for 30min. Works for rice (1:1.75 water for white) etc too. Saves you fuel and it comes out as perfectly as if you did it in a rice cooker.

John, I think more needs to be said about the M84 canteen. I have two of these. They are very nice, strong and solid. It's a pity that there are no factory lids for the aluminum cups of these canteens. Aluminum foil is fine in a home kitchen, but in the forest the wind tears the foil off the cup. There must be a solid lid for cooking in these cups. You will never find out what plastic these black M84 bottles were made of. My own research on burning a piece of plastic shows that it is some kind of polyethylene (HDPE?). Surprisingly, the M84 bottle can easily withstand being filled with boiling water (100 degrees C) and, when tightly screwed on, it remains tight in any position. However, for me the M84 bottles are not suitable for use with pleasure. These bottles don't smell, they just smell terribly of some kind of chemicals (although I scrubbed and rinsed the bottles with large amounts of water dozens of times). Also, water kept in these bottles for half an hour or more acquires a disgusting taste (BPA?? Probably something else; BPA itself does not smell so noticeably). I DO NOT RECOMMEND these bottles for frequent use 😕

Thanks John for the info. I have one of the 1930's to 40's kits, (888) on the fry pan made by Wearever, but none of the pots or fry pan has the boy scout emblem on them. The cover has a plain snap but also has two flaps on the inside that also snap together. Again no BSA markings on the cover. I also have one of the steel ones but with no cover. More information about the soviet obr.36 messkits. They used a variety of bales including ones similar to the German ww2 and NVA ones on pre and wartime models and into post ww2 production. the brownish paint seen on the example shown here was only used post ww2, ww2 models used a much greener paint and grey paints or no paint at all. The information about Soviets not attaching their messkits to their haversack is not entirely true, however the messkit was designed to be placed into a cover with loops sewn into and them it was attached via equipment straps to the ranyets rioksak (obr.36 haversack). However this practice was only done pre/early ww2 and the reemergence of the myeshok haversack meant they stored it in the bag itself.

This design of water bottle and carrier is not easily accessible. Is that deliberate ? I've read that some armies had a 'procedure' where things such as drinking could only be done when ordered etc. or it's to stop soldiers taking a drink when they should be paying attention to their surroundings etc. Or maybe it's just bad design ! It's going to bounce about a lot and make a lot of noise as well ! Adrian: UK/England

Thanks for your comment. I have slowed my video posts way down because of my schedule. In the lantern world, I'm currently working on rebuilding a 1970s Tilley X246B kerosene lantern. Just need to order a new pump. Look it up on youtube. It's a unique lantern the way its lit. In the ham radio world, I have been busy with my ham radio clubs. We had a event last saturday at a local park where we set up our portable radios. Here is a link a video on my buddy's channel on that event:ruclips.net/video/_gj9NDYvpMc/видео.htmlsi=dx6BrxJkJiDBLYA3 His channel has a lot of our club events that I'm in.
